Some people want a new OnePlus phone without paying the premium that the main OnePlus 8 series requires, and that’s why many are still excited about the prospect of the Oneplus 8 Lite, or OnePlus Z.
A new leak suggests that the OnePlus Z 5G will be powered by the Snapdragon 765G Mobile Platform instead of the MediaTek Dimensity 1000L SoC as rumoured earlier.
OnePlus announced its latest OnePlus 8/8 Pro smartphones at an online event recently as expected, but there was no word on the “Lite” model – OnePlus Z at the event. While it was expected to be unveiled alongside the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, new reports now suggest that the company could announce the OnePlus Z smartphone at a separate event in the coming months.
Although it’ll be a while before we get to see the yet-to-be-announced OnePlus Z in action, we know a fair bit about the device due to a slew of leaks centered around it. One of the more exciting aspects of the OnePlus Z was that it would be the world’s first smartphone to ship with MediaTek’s flagship Dimensity 1000 SoC. Now, a leaked image floating about the internet seems to tell us otherwise.
OnePlus Z Processor
The information comes from prolific leaker Max J on Twitter. The Tweet doesn’t reveal much in the way of specifications and emphasizes on the OnePlus Z’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 SoC. It could be that OnePlus may initially have considered the Dimensity 1000 and then switched to the Qualcomm chip somewhere down the like. OnePlus has, after all, always used Qualcomm chips in its phones, so the decision to stick to one supplier makes sense.

It is a bit disappointing, though, as we will have to wait even longer to see MediaTek’s flagship offering in action. With the OnePlus Z expected to drop sometime in Q3 2020, we should know more about it in the coming weeks. We already have an (alleged) hands-on image of the phone, and it is only a matter of time before leakers manage to dig out more information about it.
OnePlus Z Image

As expected, the phone sports a flat display with a single centered punch hole. Judging by the instructions on the display it will come with a built-in fingerprint reader. This also means the OnePlus Z will employ an OLED panel, likely of 90Hz refresh rate as last year the company committed to using that as a minimum in future products. According to past rumors the diagonal will measure between 6.4 and 6.5-inches.
OnePlus Z Camera
Around the back, we’re expecting a triple camera setup with a 48MP main shooter. The phone will likely ship with Oxygen OS on top of Android 10 and a 4,000 mAh battery.

It should be interesting to see what OnePlus has to offer with the OnePlus Z after the company discontinued the mid-range OnePlus X smartphone. We should know more information in the coming days.
